What to expect
Taking the celebrated inland scenic route, your drive skirts the northern foothills of the High and Middle Atlas ranges. You’ll cross the olive groves of the Tadla agricultural basin and the city of Beni Mellal with its Ain Asserdoun mountain springs. Climbing into the cool Middle Atlas, you’ll pass through the ancient cedar forests of Azrou, where wild Barbary apes roam freely, before rolling past the alpine chalets of Ifrane and descending into the historic Saïss valley to reach the 1,200-year-old labyrinth of Fes el-Bali.

Frequently asked questions
Which route from Marrakech to Fes is better: the highway or the scenic mountain road?
If you want the quickest and smoothest journey, the highway route via Casablanca and Rabat takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes on modern tollways. If you want to explore the countryside, the scenic N8 route through Beni Mellal, Azrou’s monkey forest, and Ifrane takes about 7 to 8 hours and is a memorable travel experience.
Can the driver take us into the car-free Medina of Fes?
Vehicles cannot enter the narrow pedestrian alleys of Fes el-Bali. Your chauffeur will drive to the nearest vehicle entrance gate to your riad (such as Bab Boujloud or Bab Ziat) and assist in arranging a local handcart porter to carry your luggage to your riad doorway.
Is it safe to see the Barbary macaque monkeys in Azrou?
Yes, the Barbary macaques in the Azrou cedar forest are accustomed to human visitors. We advise keeping a respectful distance and not offering processed snacks to safeguard their natural diet.
